Preventative

Dentistry

Preventive dentistry is the practice of caring for your teeth to keep them healthy. This helps to avoid cavities, gum disease, enamel wear, and more. There are many forms of preventive dentistry, such as daily brushing and dental cleanings. These practices are designed to ensure that teeth are clean, strong, and white.

Gentle Dental Cleanings
Regular dental check-ups can help keep your teeth and gums stay healthy, prevent gingivitis (gum disease) and cavities (tooth decay). Good dental home care and having your teeth cleaned and examined on a regular basis (usually every six months) by a caring hygienist and dentist helps prevent gingivitis and tooth decay.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is a mineral that is naturally present in water, including oceans and groundwater. Fluoride dental benefits were discovered by studying population groups that had low tooth decay rates. People that lived in areas that had fluoride naturally present in their water source had less tooth decay than people who did not have fluoride in their water source.

Fluoride not only helps prevent tooth decay, but it can also repair teeth that have been weakened by early stages of decay. Systemic fluoride is the type you drink and it helps infants and children build strong teeth. Topical fluoride is found in toothpaste, mouth rinses or is applied at the dental office and it helps strengthen teeth that are already present in the mouth.

Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are a thin plastic resin that bonds to the tooth surface. They are placed over the chewing surface of the back (posterior) teeth to prevent decay in the grooves and pits of teeth. The grooves (fissures) and pits are the most common location for children to get decay on their permanent teeth.

Laser Cold Sore Treatments
Diode Lasers are a certain wavelength of light that can treat diseased soft  tissue and promote healing. If someone who suffers from cold sores needs a lesion to heal as fast as possible, laser treatments are the best option for painless treatments that reduce healing time.

Digital X Rays
Dental x rays are still the most effective method to detect dental abscess, cysts, tumors, cancer, impacted teeth. Digital X-Rays also help detect decay.

Laser Gum Therapy
Diode lasers are a certain wavelength of light that is attracted to diseased gum tissue. Lasers help clear away the diseased tissue, kill bacteria that causes gum disease and promote healing of the gum tissue. Lasers also decrease any discomfort that is normally associated with gum therapy.

Early Childhood Screenings And Exams
Baby teeth are important for proper chewing and speech. They also are space maintainers for the adult teeth that replace them.  Baby teeth are not as strong as adult teeth and are very prone to decay. Children should have a dental exam before their first birthday. The earlier any dental issues are detected the better for the child and their teeth.

Wisdom Teeth Detection
In order to prevent future problems  caused by wisdom teeth, screenings for the presence of wisdom teeth begins in late adolescence. Wisdom teeth (third molars) that do not have enough room to erupt or are growing in the wrong direction, are easier to treat when their roots are partially developed ( before the roots are full size).

CariVu Early Decay Detection
CariVu is an intraoral camera that uses transillumination technology to detect tooth decay (caries) and cracks on the surface of teeth. It is a safe, near infrared light, that allows the dentist to see through certain areas of tooth structure, helping to detect decay.

Bite Guards For Clenching/Grinding/TMJ Disorder Prevention
Bite guards are protective devices that cover the teeth to prevent and reduce injury to tooth structure and jaw joints (TMJ).

Oral Cancer Screenings
The goal of oral cancer screening is to identify mouth cancer early. The earlier oral cancer is detected the greater chance there is for a cure. Oral cancer screenings are performed at each dental check up. If abnormal tissue is detected, a biopsy may be needed.

Malocclusion Detection

Malocclusion is a misalignment or incorrect relation between the teeth of two dental arches when they approach each other as the jaw closes. The jaw arches may have developed improperly and therefore do not match when closed. Thumb sucking during childhood is one of the most common causes of the dental arches not matching in shape and size.

Malocclusion can also be caused when the teeth are to big for the size of the jaw. Difficulty chewing or discomfort to the teeth and jaw joints may develop from malocclusion. Decay and gum disease are more prevalent in misaligned teeth. Treatments may include braces (orthodontics) or repair of irregular teeth.

Gum Disease Detection And Prevention
Gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss. One of the first signs of gum disease is bleeding gums. Red, inflamed gum tissue that bleeds easily has the first stage of gum disease, gingivitis. If gingivitis is not treated it will develop into periodontitis. Periodontitis is a disease that affects not only the cuff of gum tissue around the teeth, but also affects the bone around the teeth. Teeth become loose with advanced periodontitis. One of the best ways to detect gum disease is to measure the attachment of the cuff of gum tissue that is around the teeth (periodontal probing). Brushing and flossing at home and regular dental exams and dental cleanings help prevent gum disease.

Athletic Bite Guards
Sports guards and mouth guards are different names for the same device worn over teeth to protect them. Mouth guards are an important piece of athletic equipment for anyone participating in sports.
